Consequently, it s the first truly original Lexus, and the one in which we d always rather be the driver than a passenger. That s mostly because of its 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6, which will make many a BMW 3-series owner look very foolish at the stoplight. But straight-line performance is not the only improvement over the outgoing IS300. The IS350 is better than its predecessor in pretty much every way, whether you re talking sport or luxury. It handles as sharply and progressively as the best sporting machines, and the IS350 has an astoundingly refined and ergonomically correct interior. Oh,and you can admire its aggressive styling without understanding obscure design-speak like flame surfacing. There s no manual transmission in the 350, but there s no iDrive either— just the old familiarity of lots of buttons. Sure,the new BMW 3-series is awesome, but we kind of expected that. The Lexus IS350 is a surprise, and we like surprises.
